Exam blueprint, strategy & book tabbing

15 min read

The AAPC CPC® exam is 100 multiple-choice questions covering 17 content areas across a 4-hour open-book sitting, and a passing score is 70%. Approved books are the AMA CPT® Professional Edition, an ICD-10-CM code book and a HCPCS Level II book — current year, with handwritten notes and tabs permitted but no photocopies of external material. Time management (roughly 2.4 minutes per question) matters as much as coding knowledge.

  • ✓Content areas include 10,000-series through 60,000-series surgery, E/M, anesthesia, radiology, pathology/lab, medicine, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS Level II, compliance and practice management.
  • ✓Answer strategy: read the question stem last-line first, eliminate answers by code range, then verify the surviving codes in the book.
  • ✓Tab CPT® by section and by high-yield guidelines; highlight the E/M MDM table and the modifier appendix (Appendix A).
  • ✓Do a first pass answering everything you know quickly, mark the rest, and return — never leave a blank because there is no wrong-answer penalty.
  • ✓Bubble in batches at the end of each page group to save time and reduce misalignment errors.
